Martha M. Swanson Photograph Collection, ca. 1920s-1930s.

The Martha M. Swanson Photograph Collection consists of two photograph albums, as well as loose photographs. The bulk of the photographs are of persons, buildings and events relating to Saint Mark's mission and hospital in Nenana, Alaska, and to Circle, Fort Yukon, and Fairbanks, Alaska. Other photographs include villages, people, and landscapes along the Yukon River in interior Alaska, interior Alaskan flora, and outdoor and recreational activites in the Fairbanks region. Episcopal Church leaders and members are represented in portrait and snapshot images, as well. Also of interest are the covers of the two albums in the collection. One of the covers features a dog team traveling past a cabin and surrounded by snow and spruce trees. The scene is worked in beading on moosehide. The other album cover features a pyrographic rendering, on deer or calf skin, of a dog team passing a roadhouse with spruce trees and mountains in the background.
